I want to photo/video blog, & have the page present a "2D matrix" of thumbnails. When the user clicks on a thumbnail, a new window opens & the picture is displayed (or the video is played). Like a Textamerica.com mobile-blog:

Is there a plugin which will do this?

Right now, I can get video thumbnails presented..but all the entries are in a 1-dimensional blog format ("up & down").

Have a look at the Viewfinder Grain Theme by Mac. It does include the desired feature.

I really like the 'Viewfind Grain Theme' thumbnail page. It gives the page a visual sitemap feel.

If you have some programming/templating experience, or know someone with some spare time that does, it can actually be easier to design your own matrix sections to add to your pages.

For example, the recent, popular, and random sections on www.scenicoutlooks.com are all custom coded into the template without any third-party plugins. They are modularized into reusable functions so that the display shape is dynamic. It's more complex than a simple grid matrix, but the idea is the same.

If you are looking for a quick and easy solution, then you should try the VfG theme that Johannes metnioned.
