Jerome’s Keyword Manager

94

Update: Since WordPress 2.3 you don’t need Jeromes Keywords anymore since WordPress offers tagging right out of the box. So my manager is deprecated also - if you use an older version of WordPress i encourage you to update immediately.

Even if Jerome’s Keywords is a very, very nice and useful wp-plugin - I still missed something. How could i update previously entered tags without having to edit every single post?

The solution

The marvelous jeromes-keyword-manager (final version)

Features

These are the features i’ve been missing ever since i installed jerome’s keywords:

  • Rename, Replace or delete tags easely - All posts get updated
  • Find all posts tagged with a specific keyword
  • Find all posts without tags

Screenshots

Language Files

Thanks to all contributors - Here’s a list of all language files i know of:

Language Contributor Link
English Johannes Default language: Included
German Johannes Included
Korean Juice http://lombric.linuxstudy.pe.kr/PDS/jerome…
Japanese Plasticdreams http://plasticdreams.org/uploads/projects/jerome..

Changelog

  • 2006-07-05 Final version finished and ready to be downloaded
The final version features a SQL workaround which moves around a problem that can be found in the original jeromes-keywords plugin also.
    more info
  • 2006-07-02 Version 3 ready to download
Enhanced list: It now shows all other tags used in that posts
Possibility to find all posts WHITOUT attached tags
    Full i18n-gnu-gettext support
    more info
  • 2006-06-22 Version 2 ready to download
Plugin now shows a list of all posts tagged with a specific keyword
    more info
  • 2006-04-23 Release of original version
Allows edit-, rename- and replace-operations over all posts
    more info

Installation

How do i install a wp-plugin? Instead of repeating the old rtfm phrase i’ll explain the veeery complicated way to install one:

  1. Unzip the files into an empty directory
  2. Upload the file and directory directly into the wp-content/plugins folder of your wp-installation
  3. Go to admin panel / plugins and activate it
  4. Enjoy!

Special Thanks

Special thanks for providing ideas, problem feedback, language files, etc. go to: Mike, Juice, PlasticDreams, Sterling and all that downloaded the plugin already - You make a little developer very proud ;-)

The Future

Since Jerome’s developing on version 2 of the plugin (currently beta), which will already contain a global tag management, this little plugin will be deprecated soon. Imho it’s already better to have it all in one plugin - And i’ve learned alot about plugin programming for my second WP-plugin-project: Yet another photoblog.

Latest info: Jerome’s keywords manager will be part of jeromes-kewords v2 eventually. I’ve rewritten the code to use the new DB infrastructure and sent it to jerome, since he asked for it. Let’s have a look what will happens next ;-)

Happy Tagging!

The keywords manager you put together looks & acts much nicer than the simple one I wrote for LightPress (which is included in version 2). Plus yours supports i18n. The only thing you’re missing is the ability to operate on multiple tags, which can make major changes easier. If you’re willing to convert your keyword manager to work with the new beta, that would great! I would be happy to include it in the plugin.

Hi Jerome - Thanks for the offer - I’ll take the time and adjust the code to the new infrastructure - I’ll send you an independant file you can add to your plugin. Additionally i sent you a little bug request (incl. solution) on MySQL 3.x database engines. It’s only a marginal thing.

Wordpress plugins: meta-tags…

Wordpress is a great piece of software for development purposes, and I especially like to set up customised versions as a CMS.

Wordpress has many great strengths, but a particular weakness is that i……

" /> That at least generates a meta-description, which to me is the more important of the 2 tags meta description and meta keywords - especially for avoiding Google’s duplicate content filters. However, there are meta-tag generators out there for Wordpress. I’m currently playing around with the Xfish one, as I can control tags per page - quite important in a client install of a CMS - but there’s quite a few to choose from: Add Meta Tags - Adds the post’s categories and the post’s excerpt as keywords and description meta tags respectively, while viewing single posts. AutoMeta - Automatically generates and publishes Technorati Tags and Meta Keywords based on the content of your post (it utilises the MySQL full text index for word scoring). Once generated, tags can be hand-finished to ensure pertinence. Category Tagging - Provides a tag cloud and related posts. When using this plugin, you can use the WordPress’ categories as tags — no additional tagging plugin is needed. Creative Commons Configurator - Lets you set a CC license for your blog and set options to include licensing info in the blog header (RDF metadata), after the post’s body (HTML) and in the syndicated content (Atom, RSS2, RDF) through the CC RSS module. All this is done from a configuration page in the Administration Panel. Custom Field GUI - Enables the automated creation of form element user interface for entering Post’ custom field(s). FOAF Header - Add a FOAF link to your page’s header. FOAF Output - Personal profile page with friends (XFN) and interests, FOAF RDF/XML profile including trust statements, and extended RSS (1.0) output. Get Custom Field Values - Easily retrieve and control the display of any custom field values/meta data for posts. Head META Description - Automatically add a meta description tag to posts, Pages, categories and elsewhere on your blog. Fully customizable. HeadMeta - Provides per-post custom <link> and <meta> tags. Jerome’s Keywords - Associate keywords with your posts. Jerome’s Keywords: Related Posts - This Plugin uses Jerome’s Keywords and presents related posts according to the tags (keywords) of the current post. Jerome’s Keywords Manager - Manage keywords entered via Jerome’s Keywords. KeyCloud Widgets - Sidebar widgets to display your Jerome’s Keywords in various forms, including the venerable tag cloud. Keywords - Append keywords into Meta tags from ‘keywords’ custom field. META Relationship Links - Adds START, FIRST and LAST rel(ationship) link tags to your blog, as well as PREV(ious) and NEXT for individual posts. myStatus - Creates a subpanel of the Dashboard that allows you to create a number of fields to specify your current status and insert it into your templates. RSD 1.0 - Adds RSD support to WordPress. Tags in the Head - Tags in the Head attempts to make your website both more machine and human readable by using the ‘Tags’ you specify (from Jerome’s Keywords or Ultimate Tag Warrior) as META keywords in a page’s header. It also allows you to customize the meta description’s for various parts of your site. Tags in the Head combines good SEO with commonsense organisation using tags. Userextra - Extends user profiles to include admin-defined attributes, and provides for category access controls with per-user granularity. Usermeta - Adds API for WordPress 1.5 so that arbitrary meta data can be associated to users. Xfish_meta - Allows the inclusion of meta tags like keywords and description __________________ Search Engine Optimisation consultant Need search engine traffic? I’m using Jerome’s Keywords v2. beta 3 right now and am wondering if I should still use your plugin to help with old posts. I don’t see anything that does that yet. Or should I autometa to get started since I’ve never used tags before?

Thanks

Hi Bernard - Since Jerome asked for it (some while ago) - I’ve sent him an heavily adapted version of the manager so he could include it in his release. I’m sorry i’ve to say that he didn’t react since today. As soon i’ve time i’ll release it as standalone plugin again.

hi jerome, thinking about downloading your plugin because i have seen you have managed to get your tags on a seperate page! do i have to download your plugin for that, or did you do that without any plugin? I’d love to know, because i’m new to this whole tagging business and the forums don’t seem to help much. :(
